Roma’s fixture versus Napoli was not short of drama as the match lived up to the hype that all were hoping for.

The opening half hour saw Roma offer Napoli very little and control the larger part of possession as opportunities on goal were found by Alessandro Florenzi and Kevin Strootman but Pepe Reina proved up to the task.

The tempo of the match changed immensely when Francesco Totti pulled up lame with an injury to his flexor. Marco Borriello was introduced for the Roma captain and Napoli took advantage of Il Capitano’s exit. Goran Pandev sprung the offside trap and found himself one on one with Morgan De Sanctis, who was able to get a hand on the shot but it got by him, however, Daniele De Rossi, who was able to make a goal-line clearance on the shot, redeemed the Roma goalkeeper. De Sanctis continued to see his services necessary as he saved shots from both Marek Hamsik and Lorenzo Insigne, who came very close to breaking the 0-0 deadlock.

As half-time approached, Roma were given a free-kick in a dangerous position as Paolo Cannavaro brought down Gervinho just outside the penalty area. Miralem Pjanic made the Neapolitans pay as he was able to bury the free-kick and put the Giallorossi up 1-0 as they headed into half-time.

As the break ended, Napoli terrorized Roma’s goal from the start. Morgan De Sanctis was again called into action on several occasions as Marek Hamsik continued to appear to be the one most likely to get on the scoresheet.

Roma were given a lifeline as Paolo Cannavaro, already on a yellow and responsible for Roma’s first goal, brought down Marco Borriello in the area and Roma were awarded a penalty as the Napoli captain was sent off. Miralem Pjanic stepped up and buried the penalty to put Roma up 2-0 and seal the result.

The win keeps Roma’s perfect season intact and at the top of the Serie A table. Roma’s next fixture will be in Udine as they take on Antonio Di Natale and the rest of the Udinese squad.
