With football season now mere weeks away, it’s safe to say that the levels of excitement and anticipation surrounding the ‘beautiful game’ are now really stepping up a level.
Now, if we overlook the, shall we say, unpleasantness surrounding FIFA president Giani Infantino’s behaviour in recent weeks, the summer has already been an incredibly enjoyable one for football fans all over the globe. If autumn, winter, and spring can follow suite, football fans and sports betting fans alike, will be in for a mesmerising several months.
While the EPL has generally been the gold standard for sports betting here in the UK, over the last several years, bookmakers have noticed a distinct shift in betting behaviour as far as sports betting goes. Rather than focusing solely on the home leagues, betting fans are looking further afield. More specifically, across Europe.
Italy’s Serie A for example, is proving very popular with betting fans, and while it’s ordinarily Inter, Juventus, and AC Milan that steal the limelight, AS Roma are also proving to be fan favourites here in the UK. But how will they fare this season?
Here the new betting sites offering odds will share their opinion on Roma’s Seria A chances.
Can Roma Win Serie A?
There’s a saying, seemingly as old as time itself, which goes ‘never say never’. In football that saying rings truer than ever.
At the start of a football season, each team competing in the league has a very real chance of winning. The only issue is that some teams have a bigger chance of winning than others. While we’re sadly unable to predict the future, we can however, say with great confidence, that the 2026/27 EPL season, is probably not going to come down to a contest between, Coventry City and Ipswich Town. No, the far more likely scenario, is that it Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea will be pushing for another title.
Across the Med in Italy, despite AC Milan, Juventus, and Inter Milan all continuing to impress, Roma have been a team that have consistently been in the title hunt, at least for some duration of the season. Last season they secured their best finish in years, placing 3rd, a feat not achieved in almost a decade.
What’s even more remarkable however, is that, despite the star quality the team possesses, they have not secured the title since the 2000/01 season. Just to put that into context, The Spice Girls had only just split up during that time, and hair gel, curtains, and Adidas poppers were all the rage.
Roma have continually pushed for the title, and while Caludio Ranieri was unsuccessful in his third attempt with the club, his replacement, Gian Piero Gasperini, fared slightly better, guiding the club to a 3rd place finish, and endearing himself to the fans in the process.
If Roma are to win, they’ll have a monumental task on their hands, as Juve, Inter, AC Milan, and Napoli, all currently have better odds with the bookies. Despite this, both Bet365 and Betfred, believe they’re in with a very real chance. Betfred are currently offering odds of 12/1 for Roma to win the Serie A title, whereas Bet365 have even more confidence. Bet with them, and you’ll currently get odds of 9/1.
Massive Obstacles to Overcome
There’s a reason why teams like Juventus, Inter Milan, and AC Milan seem to do so well, season after season, year after year, not only in Serie A, but also in other tournaments such as the Champion’s League. The simple reason is, they’re just that good.
AC Milan’s Christian Pulisic for example, has really impressed in recent outings, and with Ruben Amorim gearing up for a season in charge, it’ll be interesting to see how they fare.
As far as Juventus go, while not too long ago, all eyes were on Cristiano Ronaldo, this season it’ll be young up-and-coming Turkish prodigy Kenan Yildiz, that fans, scouts, and opposition alike, will be keeping a close eye on.
Inter Milan will be equally as threatening, particularly with Bastoni looking so solid in defence and Thuram still proving to be so dangerous up front. The French forward is currently averaging a little under a goal every other game, so he’ll certainly prove tricky for Gasperini’s men.
Star Quality at Both Ends
One of the key reasons why the bookmakers believe that Roma are in with a real shout of winning the Serie A title this year, is due to the fact that they possess star quality at both ends of the pitch.
Gianluca Mancini for example, looks very much like a good old-fashioned centre back from the 1980s and 90s. He’s a big lad, he plays an aggressive style, and he’s also more than capable of scoring goals, as we have recently found out.
Recently, Roma have looked nervy in pre season, as they were battered 4-1 by Cardiff City a couple of weeks back. Despite this, they were able to turn things around and pick up a 4-1 win over Newport last weekend, and get back onto winning ways.
The difference maker, however, is likely to be Donyell Malen, who last season, was able to secure 14 goals for Roma in Serie A, out of just 18 appearances. If he can replicate that form this season, the sky’s the limit.
