Jordan Veretout gave an interview to Retesport in which he discussed his experience at Roma.
“I liked helping the team, running a lot, but I could score goals, and I managed to do a lot of that. I had three spectacular years in Rome, I loved it, my family felt very comfortable there, I made so many friends, it was hard to leave Rome, we won the Conference, it was hard to leave.”
For the French midfielder, after his third year in the capital, it was time to return home: “For me, it was the right time to return to France. There was an offer from Marseille, a great team in France, like Roma in Italy, and it was the right time to leave after three years.”
Veretout spoke about Gian Piero Gasperini: “He’s a great coach in Italy and has proven it in Europe too. I really enjoy watching Roma. They play a strong, vertical game, with constant pressure. When I see Roma defenders coming to score, it’s spectacular. I hope the Giallorossi can win the Scudetto this year. Given my characteristics, I would have enjoyed it, and I would definitely have improved even further.”
“In France, in Marseille, we had Tudor, who played with a similar system. I would have loved to be coached by him. When I was in Rome, Atalanta wanted me, so I think Coach Gasperini wanted me with him.”
Jordan Veretout spoke about his best goal for Roma: “Perhaps my first one against Napoli, from the penalty spot, with Dzeko and Kolarov giving me the ball to score under the Sud. It was a very important ball, I assure you. My idol? Nainggolan, for me, was the best midfielder in Serie A. I hoped to play with him, but it’s a shame I didn’t get to play with him in Rome.”
Veretout said he had an excellent relationship with Mourinho: “He was number one, I had a good relationship with him. I don’t know if it was him or the club before, which meant I played less. We talked about a renewal but couldn’t reach an agreement, then Marseille’s offer came. I had a good relationship with Mourinho, he was always very close to the players, he is and remains number one. We won with him, he got into the players’ heads and that will always remain the case.”
Jordan Veretout spoke about his adventure in Doha: “I’m happy here, it’s a spectacular life. Football is also difficult, despite what people think. The most important thing for me is my family, and I have to do it for them too. If Roma calls me, my wife says she wants to return to the capital (laughs). I’m not finished, I can still help if Roma wants me, I’m there…”
