There has been plenty of speculation regarding the future of AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho and a potential return to the English Premier League.
However, if Roma can finish the season strongly and secure Champions League qualification, Mourinho might well be tempted to build on the foundations he has put in place at the Stadio Olimpico.
No Doubting Mourinho’s Love For Roma
It has been clear that Mourinho has loved his time in the Eternal City so far and, were it not for an incredible season from Napoli, Roma would find themselves in the midst of a title battle this term. The Giallorossi have also enjoyed a strong campaign in Europe and find themselves at 14/1 in the football odds tonight to win the Europa League this season. It has been clear that since joining Roma in May 2021 the club have been on an upward trajectory under ‘The Special One’.
The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United boss helped Roma end a 14-year wait for silverware with victory in the Europa Conference League in his first season. The emotion was there for all to see as Mourinho helped Roma claim a European trophy and the bond between the manager and the city appears to be strong. Finishing in sixth in Serie A last term will have come as a disappointment but qualification for the Europa League was secured and Roma have reached the knockout stages this year. With a team challenging for second spot in the league this season, the progression of this side under Mourinho is there for all to see.
Champions League The Key
Looking at Mourinho’s track record, it’s clear to see the Portuguese tactician does not tend to spend long at one club before moving on to the next challenge. Due to his history of winning silverware, a major job in Europe does not become vacant without Mourinho being linked with the position. However, it’s rare the 60-year-old would leave a club when it is so clearly on the up. The biggest jobs in the Premier League are not likely to become available this summer unless something dramatic happens in the English top flight. A return to Spain seems highly unlikely, while Mourinho has not shown any great longing to try his hand in the Bundesliga.
Roma is a club that drew Mourinho in back in 2021 and is one that he has fallen for. However, the nature of the man means he is ambitious and if the Giallorossi don’t secure qualification to the Champions League then it might well put pressure on the club to keep him. Mourinho does have a contract at the Stadio Olimpico until June 2024, so Roma do have that on their side.
Despite the rumours about his future, Mourinho has been building something exciting at Roma and if a Champions League return is secured, then it would be hard for this great manager to walk away from a club on potentially the brink of something special next season.
