English defender Chris Smalling is reportedly nearing the long-awaited return from injury.

After sitting out the past five months with a chronic knee injury, Smalling is said to have made concrete steps in his recovery with Roma increasingly hopeful to see him back in the line-up within the next few weeks.

According to Il Messaggero, Smalling is waiting for the green light from the club’s medical staff to start training with the rest of the team.

At that point he will have to undergo a quick athletic preparation of at least 10/15 days.

It cannot be ruled out that he could be available again against Feyenoord, reports the newspaper.

It would be difficult to envision him being available for the first leg in Rotterdam (15 February); it’s more plausible to see him in the return match at the Olimpico (22 February).
