Marten de Roon bid farewell to Atalanta and Bergamo with a video posted on his Instagram profile, retracing a long career with the Nerazzurri before explaining the reasons that led him to choose Roma.
The Dutch midfielder spoke openly about his desire to continue playing a leading role.
A possibility that, with Atalanta’s new direction, would have been lost, and which has pushed him to accept a new challenge.
The decision was driven primarily by the desire to play, but also by the chance to reunite with Gian Piero Gasperini, the coach who profoundly influenced his career: “I accepted a change because I want to play. I feel I still have a lot to give, and unfortunately, I was left out of Atalanta’s new project. I chose the one who changed my footballing life.”
Then his thoughts inevitably return to Bergamo, to the fans, and to everything he experienced during his long career with the Nerazzurri: “But I want to thank you; you allowed me to live a fairytale for 10 years.”
