Former Roma manager Fabio Capello revealed his unsuccessful plan to bring Giorgio Chiellini to the Italian capital in the early 2000s.

On the occasion of Giorgio Chiellini’s retirement announcement, Capello was one of the technicians to comment on the Italian defender’s career.

In an interview with Sky Sport, Capello said, “I wanted him with me already at Roma, but [Juventus director, Luciano] Moggi was faster, smarter and signed him before we could even talk to him.”

“I saw him in Livorno, I wanted to bring him to the capital and after four days Juventus signed him. He was an extraordinary footballer, who has improved over the years. An example for players in his position.”
