Chris Smalling’s situation at Roma is blocking the arrival of Mats Hummels.

The German veteran defender is the favorite to replace Smalling in the Italian capital.

His agents have been in talks with the Giallorossi ever since Hummels decided to leave Borussia Dortmund in free agency.

However, negotiations have been put on hold as Roma continue to struggle in finding a new club for Chris Smalling.

According to Il Tempo, so far Roma have been unable to secure a convincing proposal from abroad for the ex-Man United player.

Smalling is no longer considered part of Roma’s plans and his future is bound to unfold elsewhere.

However, at the moment the centreback is yet to approve of any offer.

Without Smalling leaving the capital club within the next few days, Hummels and his entourage may change their mind and consider other options in free agency, reports the newspaper.
