Lorenzo Pellegrini has been at the center of controversy for his absence from Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma debut this season, but his absence was due to strictly medical reasons, not the player’s or the club’s personal decisions.
The Giallorossi captain has been criticized for spending part of his vacation in the Maldives and for undergoing nasal surgery just before the summer preseason.
However, according to sources close to the club, the timing of the operation was not chosen by either the player or Roma, but rather dictated by clinical needs related to post-operative recovery from another procedure, reports Corriere dello Sport.
Pellegrini had, in fact, undergone tendon surgery on May 16 in Finland. Because of the general anesthesia he underwent during that operation, doctors had to establish a minimum safety window before authorizing the second operation, the one on his nose.
The risk of two anesthesias in quick succession could have compromised his post-operative recovery, which is why the septum correction was postponed until early July.
The captain returned to Trigoria a few days ago, where he began his recovery under the supervision of the club’s medical staff.
His presence at the training center refutes speculation of unprofessional behavior. According to the club, Pellegrini will return to the field next week, continuing his recovery to gradually fit into Gasperini’s technical plans.
