It’s not secret that Roma is one of the most beloved football clubs in Italy and across the world. Originally founded in 1927, the club has emerged as a major player in the Italian football scene, winning Serie A three times, nine Coppa Italia, two Supercoppa titles, in addition to winning the inaugural UEFA Conference League last May.
Both past and present, several notable players have donned the red and yellow jersey of the club including Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi, Gabriel Batistuta, and Paulo Dybala, who was one of the many players mentioned in the FIFA World Cup A-Z Guide to keep an eye on.
In this article, though, we’ll be reliving and detailing some of the most memorable fixtures in Roma’s recent history.
Roma’s Memorable Recent Displays
Roma has had its fair share of memorable matches over the years, and we will now take a look at some of the more memorable matches in the team’s history. From thrilling encounters with arch-rival Lazio to thrilling victories in the Champions League, here are some of the exciting displays the Giallorossi have been involved in.
Roma vs. Lazio, 2017
Another memorable match for Roma the second leg of their Coppa Italia tie against in-city rivals Lazio. Although the Giallorossi were defeated 4-3 on aggregate, the second leg still provided plenty of entertainment for neutrals.
Losing 2-1 with less than half an hour remaining, Mohamed Salah scored twice in the final 25 minutes and nearly overturned the tie in the final moments.
Roma vs. Chelsea, 2017
Both group stage matches between Roma and Chelsea in 2017 were unforgettable. However, the clash in the Italian capital had wonder-goals galore thanks to top shelf performance from attacker Stephan El Shaarawy.
Il Faraone opened the scoring just seconds after kick-off with a scorching finish beyond the grasp of Thibaut Courtois. He added another goal before halftime by beating César Azpilicueta to Radja Nainggolan’s pass and chipping the ball into the back of the net.
Diego Perotti put the game out of reach after the halftime break thanks to a superb shot from outside the penalty area and into the bottom corner of Courtois’ net.
Roma vs. Barcelona, 2018
Without question, the Giallorossi’s Champions League tie in 2018 against Barcelona in 2018 will remain forever in Roma club lore.
The Spanish giants hammered Roma in the first leg, winning 4-1 at Camp Nou and all but a certainty to progress to the semifinals of the competition. Roma suffered two own-goals before Gerard Pique added a third.
However, a late goal from Edin Dzeko would prove vital despite Luis Suarez adding a fourth in the final minutes.
As everyone knows by now, Roma shocked the Blaugrana when the sides met at the Stadio Olimpico for the return leg. A brilliant finish from Dzeko inside the opening 10 minutes breathed life into the team and caused a exuberant atmosphere within the stadium.
Captain Daniele De Rossi made it 2-0 through a penalty early in the second half after Edin Dzeko was brought down in the area by Gerard Pique.
Finally, Kostas Manolas delivered a winner in the 82nd with a perfectly placed headed goal from a corner kick to secure Roma a place in the Champions League semifinals.
