With just over a month to go until the winter transfer window opens, Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma, currently top of the Serie A table with 27 points from 36, are beginning to monitor various prospects to strengthen their squad.

The goal is to improve every single area to be increasingly competitive and face the triple threat as best as possible.

And so, according to journalist Rudy Galetti, Sporting Director Massara has set his sights on Mertcan Ayhan, a young defender from Schalke 04. The 19-year-old Turk also holds a German passport and is considered one of the best rising central defenders in Germany.

Given Ndicka’s imminent departure for the Africa Cup of Nations with his Ivory Coast team, adding a defender to the Giallorossi roster would allow Gian Piero Gasperini to better manage his energy, knowing he can also count on the likes of Ziolkowski, Rensch, and Ghilardi. He has made nine appearances for his club so far this season.

Schalke are asking €8 million to release the 2006-born defender, whose contract with the Ruhr club expires in June 2028. In addition to Roma, Turkish club Galatasaray are also strongly interested in Ayhan.
