Roma underwent a major overhaul in their sporting department over the summer, and the move from Frederic Massara to Tony D’Amico also impacted the transfer market already underway.
The former Giallorossi director had initiated several negotiations before his departure, but with the arrival of the new sporting director, some options were abandoned or took a different direction.
Among these was Johan Vasquez, the Mexican defender from Genoa who was being closely followed by the club.
According to “Claro Sports,” Massara had worked diligently on the deal, and the Trigoria club had become one of the clubs closest to the player. However, the Rossoblu center-back was also in the sights of other European clubs, with interest from Italy, Germany, Turkey, and Spain.
Roma had taken concrete steps to sign Vasquez, considered an important asset to Genoa and the team’s leader. However, negotiations stalled following a change in management: Massara’s departure and D’Amico’s arrival prompted a rethink.
The Mexican defender was subsequently also pursued by Juventus, who had assessed his profile, but Vasquez ultimately remained at Genoa, continuing his experience with the Rossoblu.
