Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni explained the controversial decision that led to Paulo Dybala’s exclusion from Argentina’s squad for Copa America.

The Roma superstar was recently left out of Argentina’s squad list despite an extremely positive season with the Giallorossi.

In spite of his 16 goals and 9 assists across all competitions, Dybala was not able to ensure a place in Scaloni’s ranks.

In an interview with Tyc Sports, Scaloni explained his decision and admitted that it was a ‘painful’ one.

“When you leave a player out, especially in the conditions we did it in, it’s always difficult,” said Scaloni.

“We have a special affection for Dybala, but we always say that the team comes first,” he continued.

“Given the circumstances, especially in positions where we had some drawbacks, we made the decision to make this list without him.”

“With all the pain in the world, because we know what he gave us, it’s a decision we made. It’s the worst thing about being a coach, we accept it, we have to do it and it’s difficult.”
