Monza were dealt a blow today after it was learned veteran attacker Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez is potentially facing a multi-year ban from football.

Less than one month after leaving Sevilla and officially joining Monza as a free agent, the Argentine will be forced to miss two years of action after failing a drug test, according to Spanish outlet Relevo.

Gomez is said to have tested positive in November 2022 and blamed the result on a children’s cold syrup. However, anti-doping authorities rejected his explanation. As a result, the ex-Atalanta man is unlikely to take part in this weekend’s showdown against the Giallorossi and could be forced into retirement.

It’s a situation that goes from bad to worse for Monza boss Raffaele Palladino. The team had signed Papu just three days after they lost attacker Gianluca Caprari for the season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
