Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique recently spoke out against the idea of having a European Super League.

During the event Business Sport Forum de Expansión, Pique took the stage and addressed the detrimental effects the Super League would have on clubs like Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

“It would be a very limited competition and I am against that,” said the Spaniard. “Many teams such as Aston Villa, West Ham, Betis, Sevilla, Roma would be left out… In the end the big teams would gain a lot of value, but an important part of football would be destroyed.”

“Those are perhaps second-tier teams but they have a huge following of fans. Sporting merit must prevail and this is why I am against the Super League.”
