Roma are reportedly steps away from finalizing the arrival of Leonardo Bonucci.

The Italian veteran centreback is in talks to join Roma on a free transfer from Union Berlin in January.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Roma and Bonucci’s entourage have been engaged in discussions for the past week with the veteran defender representing a low-cost reinforcement for Roma’s backline in the absence of Chris Smalling.

Bonucci knows Roma assistant coach Salvatore Foti very well who acted as the mediator in the initial conversations with the technical staff and Mourinho, who expressed his appreciation for his arrival.

Paulo Dybala also contributed to the approval of Bonucci’s arrival: the former Juventus player shared a positive view of the ex-Bianconeri captain.

FInally, the newspaper claims Bonucci is already in Italy for the holidays and waiting for Roma’s final OK in order to formalize his return to Serie A.
