Former Roma defender Toni Rudiger looked back on his time in the Italian capital and, more specifically, on the tense relationship between club legend Francesco Totti and manager Luciano Spalletti.
In an interview with GOAL.com, Rudiger noted that, despite their differences, Spalletti and Totti respected each other.
The feud eventually culminated in Totti’s decision to retire and Spalletti leaving Roma in favor of Inter.
“There was definitely a lot of tension in the dressing room when they were there,” said Rudiger. “The two of them had a history that I didn’t know about.”
“But in the end they both respected each other,” he added. “It was simple. Spalletti and Totti were two alpha males fighting for territory.”
