Gasperini’s defense tops Europe

In 2025, Roma built the best defense in Europe: in the calendar year, the Giallorossi conceded only 13 goals and now share the top spot with reigning Italian champions Napoli.

Until the attacking line has absorbed Gian Piero Gasperini’s philosophy, the Giallorossi will continue to concede as little as possible, and so far they’ve succeeded very well.

The Roma coach’s team has a defensive stance and tends to consolidate over the 90 minutes, but they’re currently also managing to respond to goals conceded, as was the case in Florence.

Svilar, Mancini, Ndicka, and Celik are the faces of this defensively focused Roma.

The midfield, composed of Manu Koné, Bryan Cristante, and the wingers, also plays an important role in containing the opposition.

“In football, everything starts with the attack. When you’re dangerous up front and the ball moves, everything else improves. We’re on the fence, but some are putting in superlative performances. Svilar, the defenders, Koné, and Soulé are the reason we’re at the top now.”

This is how Gasperini spoke to Corriere dello Sport about his attack and his team. The Giallorossi are tenth in the Expected Goals rankings, stuck at 6.95.

The Roman team scores as much as they create, but they must improve in this area. With a near-perfect defense, it’s up to the attack to raise the tempo to deserve a Champions League spot.
