Roma sporting director Frederic Massara will have to deal with several thorny issues starting in January, including the expiring contracts of Zeki Celik, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Stephan El Shaarawy, and Paulo Dybala.

While the other issues are still open, neither side wants to part ways with the number 21 in June.

It took time to decide: the Argentine wanted to test himself physically and technically, as a key player in Gasperini’s project.

Roma was considering the financial implications of the deal, despite seeing him as a symbol for fans and sponsors.

The renewal would not be at the current figure of around €8 million per season.

Dybala will have to accept a pay cut that would enable the definitive agreement. Negotiations will begin in the coming weeks, writes Il Corriere dello Sport.
