Wijnaldum to undergo surgery on fractured tibia Monday morning

John Solano

Less than one match into the season, Roma have already been dealt a huge injury blow after it was revealed Georginio Wijnaldum suffered a fractured tibia during today’s training session.

The Dutchman underwent scans after he collided with young attacker Felix Afena-Gyan in the final portion of today’s session ahead of tomorrow’s league fixture against Cremonese.

Tests revealed a small fracture in the midfielder’s right tibia—not a particularly serious injury but one that requires an extended period of time to heal.

However, in order to speed up the recovery process, Il Tempo reports Wijnaldum has opted to undergo surgery tomorrow (Monday) at Villa Stuart hospital in Rome.

The veteran doesn’t want to miss out on the upcoming World Cup and wants to return to the pitch with Roma by the new year. The hope is he’ll recover completely within 3-4 months.
