Roma suffered their first defeat of the season after being dismantled by Udinese 4-0 at the Dacia Arena.

It’s the second heaviest defeat suffered by the Giallorossi during the Jose Mourinho-era

Much like in their previous away match against Juventus, Roma found themselves down early in the match.

Destiny Udogie fired the hosts into the lead less than five minutes after kick-off after a horrific error from Rick Karsdorp. Udogie pounced on the Dutchman’s weak attempted backpass to Rui Patricio and fired the ball into the back of the net.

Almost immediately, the Giallorossi responded with several goalscoring attempts, nearly drawing level when Paulo Dybala was through on goal but failed to hit the target.

Gerard Deulofeu came close to doubling Udinese’s advantage with a free-kick that narrowly missed the top right corner, keeping things at 1-0 to the hosts.

Unhappy with his team’s first half display, Roma boss Jose Mourinho introduced Zeki Celik and Andrea Belotti at half-time in place of Karsdorp and Bryan Cristante.

The changes made an immediate impact when it appeared Çelik won a clear penalty just a few minutes into the second half. The Turkish international was brought down in the Zebrette’s penalty area but referee Fabio Maresca waived play on and didn’t feel the need to review the incident on the VAR monitor.

Roma’s bench erupted after the decision with Jose Mourinho and captain Lorenzo Pellegrini booked for protesting.

Not long thereafter, it went from bad to worse for the capital club when Lazar Samardzic’s left footed shot from outside the box skipped over the arms of Rui Patricio, doubling Udinese’s lead.

The hosts added two more goals before full-time thanks to a pair of sensational counter-attacks.

Roma won’t have much time to brood over the result, though. They’re back on the pitch to begin Europa League play on Thursday when they travel to Bulgaria to face Ludogorets.
