Empoli’s Paolo Zanetti bitter over Roma loss: “We could have won tonight.”

As Roma beat their hosts 2-1 in Tuscany, Empoli boss Paolo Zanetti is forced to leave the Stadio Castellani empty-handed. The Italian technician sounded frustrated despite Jose Mourinho paying him a compliment after the final whistle.

“It’s always nice when Mourinho pays you a compliment, but in the end what matters is the result and tonight we feel bitter about it,” he told Sky Sport.

“We leave this game all the more convinced of our own abilities. We played the game we wanted, without setting defensive barricades. This is the mentality I want.”

“We have tasted the possibility of winning the game tonight, but we go home with nothing to show for it.”

“I asked for uniformity when it comes to refereeing,” Zanetti added when asked about episodes not going Empoli’s way earlier tonight. “I didn’t understand how it works. In Spezia-Sassuolo, the Ligurians had a penalty with a man simply swinging his arm wide. Here, in the same way, Cristante’s elbow hits Satriano right on the nose. There was contact.”
