Head of Roma’s Youth sector Vincenzo Vergine – who was recently responsible for appointing Andrea Cupi as the club’s new Primavera coach following Alberto De Rossi’s departure from the role – was interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport on a number of topics.
Among other things, Vergine outlined the key Roma’s success in being the leading Youth development team in Italy.
“Sure, we take standings into account and the Primavera’s position in the league table is important,” Vergine told the Italian newspaper. “But, only if winning is used as an instrument for something more long term.”
“For us at Roma the real trophy is seeing youth players get a chance in the first team,” he added.
