After being heavily linked with a move to both Roma and Inter, highly coveted free agent defender Matthias Ginter has decided to remain in Germany.
Earlier today, the 28 year-old officially made his return to boyhood club Freiburg, where he spent nearly a decade before leaving in 2014 for Borussia Dortmund.
He rejoins the club on a free transfer after deciding not to renew his contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he’s been since 2017.
“I wanted to do something special in my career, and there’s nothing more meaningful to me than a return to SC and to my home,” Ginter told Freiburg’s website.
“The development the club has undergone, as well as the potential in the team and the discussions with the club over the last weeks have been great. To find something like that in my hometown, especially nowadays, is extremely rare. It was just a perfect fit all round.”
Gladbach announced in December that Ginter would leave at the end of the season. He subsequently drew interest from several clubs throughout England and Italy, including the Giallorossi.
