Jan Vertonghen was unveiled as Benfica’s latest reinforcement on Friday despite having been pursued heavily by Roma

Today, the defender’s agent, Tom De Mul, spoke to Belgian outlet Sporza to discuss his client’s decision.

“Benfica did well in convincing Vertonghen because there were other teams interested, but for them, Jan was a priority. They offered him stability and continuity, especially with a three-year contract, which is crucial for Jan at this stage of his career,” he said.

“There were contacts with Italian clubs such as Roma, Inter and especially Napoli, which at a certain point had become very concrete. But for Jan, a three-year contract was important”.
