Atalanta midfielder Marten De Roon has been penalized for an offensive gesture in the aftermath of Atalanta 3-1 Roma.
The Dutch player was recently fined €2,500 by the Italian federation (FIGC) for posting a photo on his social media which was categorized under “libelous, inflammatory, abusive and offensive content.”
The picture was taken in the aftermath of Atalanta’s win over Roma on 24 April, with De Roon displaying a middle finger with Conference League keychain.
The tagline to the photo read: “When your roots are in Rotterdam and you beat Roma,” alluding to Roma’s win over Feyenoord in the Conference League final in 2022.
