Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso returned to discussing his team’s Europa League elimination at the hands of Roma before his team’s league affair against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The Giallorossi knocked the German side out of the competition on Thursday evening, winning 1-0 on aggregate–a result that still stings the Spaniard admitted.

“There’s no question—we are obviously sad after Thursday evening,” he told the media during his pre-match press conference.

“But we take a lot of positives with us for our development: the mentality of the team, the desire to fight, the high concentration and the outstanding connection between the team and the fans—that was sensational.”

He added, “Our last two league games are enormously important. If we want to be successful in the future then we have to continue to go our way. We want to experience even more nights like yesterday. That’s why we play football.”
