Castan reflects on Gerson’s Roma tenure: “He learned a lot, but returning to Brazil was his greatest decision”.

Former Roma defender Leandro Castan appeared on Instagram today and was asked about former Roma and fellow Brazilian midfielder Gerson.

The 22 year-old departed from the Giallorossi this past summer to return to his homeland with Flamengo.

Gerson is widely considered one of the biggest flops of Roma’s recent era after having been purchased by the capital club for just under €20 million.

“Returning to Brazil was the greatest decision of his career. He stopped being loaned-out to various places and is now able to play the way he’s dreamed of,” Castan said.

“You have to be very tactically disciplined in Italy. He was very young and quite shy when he joined. Plus, they didn’t know what his best position was”.

“They tried him in attack but those roles were already consolidated by Salah and Gervinho. Then he lost his place and went to Fiorentina on loan”.

Gerson ended up being sold by Roma last July for just under €12 million.
