Roma defender Chris Smalling was back in the starting line-up for Roma tonight.

After struggling with injuries, the Englishman returned to the Giallorossi’s formation with Milan in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinals and delivered an excellent performance.

At full-time, Smalling spoke to Sky Sport.

“This is a special night for me, this has been one of the most difficult seasons of my career, with many months out of action. It’s been difficult also on a mental level. I’m happy to have contributed to the victory.”

“We played with great confidence and the win was very deserved,” he added.

“De Rossi? He’s had an incredible impact on the team. He turned things around for us. We’ve been playing great in Italy and Europe.”
