Roma centre-back Chris Smalling commented on his side’s level of confidence following their first European silverware, as well as detailed his time at the club.
“I think it was enough to see the kind of celebrations people did after we won to understand how important that victory was to them,” he told Corriere dello Sport.
“Now, it’s important to give continuity to our results.”
“The first year I played at Roma I was in loan and I had no injuries, then in the second year shortly after signing my new contract I got injured.”
“It wasn’t serious, but it was an annoying injury and I dragged it on for several months.”
“The second season was negative, but I managed to resolve the physical problems without the need for surgery.”
When asked about Mourinho’s first season at the club, Smalling did not hesitate to compliment the ex-Man United boss. “A great coach like Mourinho who has a huge reputation all over the world is the perfect fit for Roma.”
“It is no coincidence that he won immediately in his first season.”
