Chris Smalling’s time at Roma appeared to be up in the summer after the capital club unveiled Jose Mourinho as their new manager in May.
The pair had a tumultuous relationship during their time together at Manchester United and it was widely believed the Englishman would seek a return back to the Premier League. However, things have taken a u-turn this season with Smalling becoming as a focal point within Mourinho’s defensive setup.
And with his contract expiring in 2023, it’s rumored the Giallorossi could try to extend his contract by an additional season.
These whispers only increased after the defender’s agent, Will Thornton, published a photo of himself at the club’s training center on Instagram earlier today.
After struggling with injuries earlier in the season, Smalling has emerged as an undisputed first-choice selection for Roma: starting in 17 of the 21 matches he’s appeared in.
