Chris Smalling’s contract contains clause with automatic renewal

Chris Smalling of AS Roma

Roma and defender Chris Smalling want to continue working together after the Englishman helped lead the Giallorossi to their first ever European trophy.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that both parties want the same thing and that is to extend their time together.

According to the Italian newspaper, Smalling’s current contract – which is set to expire in a year from now – includes a clause with an automatic renewal.

In fact, the clause will be triggered once the centre-back reaches 20 club appearances next season.

Once that is taken care of, Smalling’s contract will be automatically renewed for one more season until 2024.
