Chris Smalling’s Roma contract to be automatically extended until 2024

Roma defender Chris Smalling is entering his final year with the capital club after joining the Giallorossi on a permanent deal in 2020.

Over time the English defender proved to be one of the most reliable centrebacks in Serie A and gained the status of an undisputed start in Jose Mourinho’s formation.

According to Il Messaggero both Roma and Smalling want to continue working together beyond this season.

The Italian newspaper reports that a clause in Smalling’s contract will be soon triggered to guarantee an automatic extension until 2024. After putting nagging injuries behind him, Smalling continues to be a pivotal player for Mourinho and the club’s plans going forward.
