Daniele De Rossi was victorious in his first match at the San Siro as Roma’s head coach.
The young technician helped lead his side to a crucial victory in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinals.
In his post-match interview with Rai Sport, De Rossi explained the decision-making process that led to Stephan El Shaarawy switching flanks and playing on the right alongside Zeki Celik – a move that proved important in containing the likes of Rafael Leao and Theo.
“We knew that physically we couldn’t ask of Dybala to cover Theo. And Cristante also couldn’t play in that position,” explained De Rossi.
“We moved El Shaarawy who proved calm and accepted this task. We knew he could give this type of performance.”
“I had spoken with Stephan before the match, I told him he would play on the right and he was super positive about it, he welcomed the challenge.”
