Daniele De Rossi outlines Roma’s quality with and without Dybala

Andy Mattioli

Daniele De Rossi’s debut offered plenty of thrills as Roma beat Verona 2-1 with a strong first half followed by a more complicated second half at the Stadio Olimpico.

In his post-match press conference, De Rossi was asked specifically whether the team’s drop in quality was directly linked to Paulo Dybala’s exit in the 58th minute.

“Beyond the quality of the player himself, if you remove someone like Totti – whoever comes will have a difficult time to replicate what Totti did – you could have even put Toni in and the same thing applied.”

“The same happens with Dybala, it’s not easy to replicate what he does, I put Zalewski in a position he hadn’t played in for a long time and perhaps I put him in difficulty.”

“Obviously, if Dybala leaves the pitch there is less technical quality, if Leao leaves the pitch for Milan they lack the things Leao can offer when going forward. If you have less quality on the pitch you can have problems. Roma, even without Dybala, should always be able to beat Hellas Verona, and I think in the second half we were too slow in moving the ball and that hurt us.”
