Ex-Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi obtained his first managerial victory this afternoon after his Spal side hammered Cosenza 5-0 in Serie B.

De Rossi’s men ran riot over the 13th placed Cosenza, scoring twice within the first 20 minutes of the affair before adding three more in the second half.

It marks the first win in three matches for Spal following the 39 year-old’s appointment earlier this month as the replacement for Roberto Venturato.

The team drew 0-0 last weekend against Cittadella then lost a heartbreaker against Genoa in the Coppa Italia 1-0—losing after il Grifone scored an injury time penalty in the first half.

Today’s success, though, allowed the Ferrara-based side to temporarily leapfrog from 14th to 10th in the Serie B table—five points from a promotional playoff place.

“We had a very good match. Our attitude in these first three games has been the same, but today we played with more clarity,” De Rossi told reporters after the match.

“I’m happy for the guys, we did what we wanted today. I kept telling the team sometimes you have to go out there and make your own luck—good things happen when you’re proactive.”

Adding, “They worked well during the week and showed total focus, so I’m very happy for them. This team has quality, strong players with a lot of personality.”

“My job is to bring out the best in them and do my best to hide any potential flaws, if any.”
