Despite dropped points, Fonseca in high spirits after Sassuolo

John Solano

Roma boss Paulo Fonseca was visibly animated after full-time following his side’s 0-0 draw against Sassuolo.

The Portuguese tactician was sent off at half-time for confronting referee Fabio Maresca, who has drawn strong criticism following a number of incorrect or dubious decisions, following his decision to show a second yellow card to Pedro.

“I’m very proud of the team. We played a good game and had the better scoring chances. Defensively we were organised throughout the match and we didn’t allow Sassuolo many opportunities to grab a goal, I’m very proud,” he stated to Sky Sport.

“The refereeing episodes speak for themselves. I don’t understand the first yellow card given to Pedro, how do can you book someone for that? And what about the foul on Pellegrini? How is that only a yellow?”

“I understand that the referee perhaps didn’t see it, but VAR should have seen it. And then as for the penalty that wasn’t given, I have no doubts about it.”

“Just like we did on Thursday, we played well today.”
