It remains to be seen where Edin Dzeko will play next season. Roma’s number 9 had a disappointing 20/21 campaign filled with locker room disputes with head coach Paulo Fonseca, injuries and numerous wasted goal-scoring chances: the striker finished with a mere 13 goals and 4 assists in all competitions.
As we know, with Mourinho’s arrival, Tiago Pinto is working day and night on reducing the wage bill. The Bosnian is the primary suspect in this case, with a salary of well over 7mln euros.
At 35 years of age, Dzeko does not seem to fit into Roma’s new project. However, selling the player might be more problematic than we think: Dzeko is looking for a minimum of two years worth of contract.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sport, the only team that has expressed concrete interest in the player is Turkey’s reigning champion, Besiktas.
The final decision as to whether keep or sell Dzeko will largely depend on Mourinho. However, the Bosnian’s elevated ‘top player’ salary might scare off most potential suitors.
