Following his collapse last week, Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove, who’s on loan from Roma, agreed to undergo surgery to implant an internal defibrillator—a procedure likely to bring his career in Italian football to an end.

Although the procedure was performed to help prevent future health complications, Italy’s strict regulations prohibit players with subcutaneous devices from competing in Serie A.

As a result, Bove will be forced to continue his club career abroad.

These rules previously led Inter to part ways with Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen, who collapsed during Euro 2020 and later resumed his career with Brentford after leaving Italian football.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the operation is scheduled for this coming Monday. Once released from the hospital, he plans to visit Viola Park and bid farewell to Fiorentina—which was confirmed by teammate Dodo during a Twitch stream.

In the meantime, he’ll undergo rehabilitation with the aim of returning for the 2025/26 season, while his agent discusses a contract termination with parent club Roma.
