El Shaarawy details Roma’s team spirit in defeat to Napoli

Andy Mattioli

Stephan El Shaarawy’s goal gave Roma a chance to equalize and take home a precious draw in tonight’s match at the Maradona stadium. However, Napoli found the winning goal only minutes later.

Despite the loss, El Shaarawy spoke about Roma’s team spirit and his adaptability to Mourinho’s needs.

“The coach asks me to go and press their full-back and when the ball starts to move I have to immediately track back,” he told DAZN after the game. “It is a role that I have to fill out of necessity, but I can do it easily. I can also play in that position, I play where it’s needed if this can help the team.”

“Tonight was a great spirit and desire to come to this stadium and play directly against them. Up front, however, we had the strongest team in the league and so it’s never easy.”

“Due to my characteristics, I prefer to be play in attack, even if it’s clear that by filling in as a fullback I have fewer chances, but I have to do what the coach asks of me. The spirit that we showed tonight is the right one and we must continue like this,” he added.

“Zaniolo? It’s not easy for me to talk about a teammate and the delicate situation he is in. We just want to do well and qualify for Champions League football. We’d like to focus on that.”
