El Shaarawy yet to convince Mourinho of contract extension

Andy Mattioli

Stephan El Shaarawy’s future remains uncertain as the player nears the end of his contract with the Giallorossi.

The Roma attacker will become a free agent in June unless the club offer him an extension given El Shaarawy’s attachment to Roma.

As reported by Corriere dello Sport, unlike in the case of Chris Smalling, Roma hold an option on El Shaarawy’s renewal and can trigger it at will.

However, the Italian newspaper reports that the club and, more importantly, Jose Mourinho are not fully convinced of El Shaarawy going forward.

The player has struggled to provide consistency in his performances and, despite his versatility on the wing and in the attack, he is not deemed as a key performer for the Giallorossi.

El Shaarawy will have to use the coming months to his advantage and prove Roma that he is worthy of an additional year with the club.
