In anticipation of the upcoming Europa League tie featuring two of his former teams, ex-Brazilian midfielder Emerson shared his thoughts on the showdown next month between Roma and Milan.
The 47 year-old, who previously donned the jerseys of both clubs, reminisced about his experiences ahead of the much-anticipated encounter—recalling the intensity and significance of the rivalry.
“I always featured in these showdowns with Roma because I was in great shape and a regular starter,” he remarked to MilanNews.
“I remember how impressive Milan always were—always the team to beat. The games were always special and featured absolute champions like Paolo Maldini, Cafu, and Dida.”
He continued, “As for the Europa League, it’s nice to see two teams I’m connected to meet in Europe, which is also a positive sign because it means a pair of Italian clubs progressed in the competition.”
“Up until a few years ago, Juventus were the only Italian club making headway in Europe—it’s a sign that Italy is back.”
When asked to predict the forthcoming clash, Emerson acknowledged the challenge posed by two sides intimately familiar with each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
“It’s difficult to predict because both teams have a strong understanding of each other,” he noted. “Roma, especially, has shown remarkable improvement lately, as evidenced by their strong performance against Fiorentina despite facing difficulties.”
Adding, “The return leg at the Olimpico could pose a threat to Milan. Their task is to ensure they enter that match in the best possible condition because the pressure at the Olimpico is immense.”
“The fervent support for Roma often proves to be a decisive factor, capable of overwhelming the opposition.”
Reflecting on Roma’s resurgence, the Brazilian lauded the impact and dramatic turnaround led by former teammate Daniele De Rossi.
“It’s particularly gratifying to see him in that role [as head coach],” he said.
“De Rossi embodies the spirit of Roma and carries a profound sense of responsibility. He truly deserves this opportunity, and I vividly recall his dedication and determination from his early days.”
