Former Chelsea and Real Madrid defender Ricardo Carvalho was recently asked about whether he followed Serie A in his spare time.

Carvalho’s answer was affirmative. The Portuguese centre-back – who retired in 2018 – said he’s closely following his mentor’s work at the capital club.

The two worked together at Porto, Chelsea and Real Madrid.

“I could never not follow his work,” said Carvalho to TuttoJuve. “My best career years were in big part thanks to José.”

“He has always taught me that in order to be successful you have to work hard. You always have to learn from the best, and he’s one of them.”

“But I think it’s impossible to imitate him, simply because he has his own style and I’ll have mine. He will always be the Special One.”

“To be honest with you,” he concluded. “I don’t think he’s too happy right now, he’s not happy unless he wins.”

“He’s doing a great job and Roma is a great challenge for him. Serie A is a difficult league with several teams better than Roma.”

“You appreciate a manager like José because he always wants more, and next year he’ll be fighting harder in the league.”
