Former Roma defender Vincent Candela – one of the members of the Scudetto winning squad of 2001 – reacted to Jose Mourinho’s exit.

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Candela shared his thoughts on the Special One’s departure.

“He made the fans love the team even more than before, with the stadium always full,” said the retired French professional.

“From the point of view of results he did just enough. Winning the Conference League was a normal thing, Roma were the strongest team that year. And even the final in Budapest, Roma were stronger than their opponents. There, for example, I didn’t understand the use of Wijnaldum, who was a player who already had his mind elsewhere.”

“The problem lies in the league. We never managed to get to 4th place, we could certainly have done more over these last two seasons.”

“The team’s style of play has certainly been disappointing over the years. And then the fact of always finding an extra reason for defeats is something I didn’t like: the roster not being deep enough, him repeatedly saying that without Dybala the team is no longer the same, calling some players traitors. In my day these things couldn’t be said, the problems were solved inside the locker room. And then some choices on the pitch also left me perplexed.”
