Former longtime Roma goalkeeper coach, Guido Nanni, weighed in Rui Patricio’s first season in the Italian capital.
The shot-stopper was acquired from Wolves last summer to shore up the Giallorossi’s struggles in goal. In his first season, the Portuguese international impressed, reaching 15 clean sheets in Serie A and registering several incredible performances.
“It’s tough to give a lot of detail on a goalkeeper that I don’t coach simply due to all nuances involved. However, right after they acquired him I stated he was a good goalkeeper,” he told Radio Radio.
“Though, I also thought he needed to work more on when he comes off his line, which we saw a few times during the year. But he’s an incredibly efficient goalkeeper, his important performances balanced out his mistakes.”
Nanni was also asked to compare the veteran to a pair of ex-Roma shot-stoppers, Wojciech Szczesny and Alisson.
“For me, Patricio isn’t a goalkeeper that Szczesny and Alisson are capable of being. Those two are complete goalkeepers. However, he still had a worthy campaign and an important season for Roma.”
