Former Roma sporting director Gianluca Petrachi weighed in on the club’s decision to appoint De Rossi and the coach’s progress since his arrival in January.
In an interview with TvPlay, “I started following De Rossi as a coach when he went to SPAL and it was already clear that he had the makings of a coach. In his experience as a footballer he had two reference coaches such as Spalletti and Conte who showed him the ropes.”
“He is an extremely intelligent man and I think he has taken a lot from the two of them, but not only that. At this start of his career he is trying to bring his footballing beliefs and his ideas, but in perspective I think he has all the humility necessary to have a great career.”
“There have been many players who dictated football on the pitch, but once they moved to the other side, that of the coach, they did not have the humility to immerse themselves in the new role. In the last few days I read his interview in which he revealed that he had taken notes from De Zerbi: this is his strength. I also spoke with Giacomazzi (De Rossi’s assistant) and he too told him that Daniele has all the makings of a coach.”
“Now he still doesn’t have a precise tactical identity, but he will get there tomorrow. I hope that he can hold onto the Roma bench, which is always quite coveted, because I know what he can offer to his beloved club.”
