RomaPress – Former Roma captain Daniele De Rossi officially landed his first managerial role following his retirement as a player in January 2020.

After spending the last eighteen months on Roberto Mancini’s staff with the Italian national team, De Rossi was announced as the new manager of Serie B side SPAL.

The Ferrara-based side were in search for a new manager after they decided to sack Roberto Venturato yesterday after the team were defeated 2-0 by Frosinone.

The defeat dropped SPAL to 14th in the Serie B table with a record of 2 win, 3 draws, and 3 defeats.

De Rossi will be reunited with former Roma executive and current SPAL president Joe Tacopina, who spent three years with the Giallorossi from 2011 until 2014.

The former Roma, Bologna, and Venezia executive spoke exclusively to RomaPress to discuss his decision to appoint the World Cup winner as the club’s next coach.

“Daniele is a natural born leader,” he said.

“He’s someone I’ve been very close with for thirteen years. When we were at Roma together, I saw a unique set of leadership qualities in him.”

Adding, “When he was still playing, it was like having a manager with you on the pitch.”
