The Italian FA (FIGC) released a statement today on their official website addressing the latest updates for Serie A and a possible resumption of play.
“In accordance with the provisions issued by FIFA and UEFA in recent weeks, the FIGC has expressed its desire to resume and complete professional competitions (Serie A, Serie B, and Serie C) by 20 August,” they stated.
“Prior to the restart of competitive activity, the Federal Council will be tasked with determining a new sporting format should the competitions be interrupted by COVID-19. A short playoff or playout could be used to identify the outcome of these competitions, including promotion and relegation”.
The statement also revealed that the current table and number of matches played could be used in the event that the season is definitively unable to be resumed.
Furthermore, it was also learned that the 2019/2020 season will “officially” end on 31 August and the 2020/2021 campaign will begin on 1 September – regardless of whether or not play on the pitch actually resumes.
