Fonseca: “Our guys never stopped believing that we could overturn the 1-0. We got too stretched at times”.

Roma manager Paulo Fonseca appeared on Roma TV following his side’s 2-1 victory over Sampdoria this evening. Here’s what the Portuguese boss had to say:

Did you expect this sort of reaction in the first match back?
It was a tough game, but it was the first since the lockdown. We didn’t have any friendly matches to prepare. We started well but then we conceded and the team was less calm and we got stretch. We gave them too much space. We did well in the second half and deserved the result.

How useful was it to have 5 substitutions? How much of an advantage can it be to have a depth within the roster?
The substitutes were very useful. Our players aren’t in the best condition so it’s important. We chose this team at a time when we have almost everyone available. I must say that we had players who trained for only three days, such as Pellegrini, Mancini and Zappacosta.

All the players had a good attitude and didn’t stop believing that we could get the result. We deserved it.

Atalanta keeps going like a train.
We have to keep believing.
