Former Roma defender Leandro Castan retires from football

Former Roma central defender Leandro Castan announced his retirement from football late tonight on social media.

The veteran decided to call it quits and leave Brazilian second division side Guarani FC after just eight matches.

Castan, 35, joined the Giallorossi in 2012 from Corinthians and quickly established himself as a first choice defender under both Zdenek Zeman and Rudi Garcia.

“I want to thank everyone who shared this dream with me, a hug to all of you,” wrote Castan on Twitter.

After an incredible 2013/14 campaign, the Brazilian was diagnosed with a cavernoma in his brain and underwent an operation in December 2014.

Castan eventually returned to health, making a heroic return to the pitch in 2016. He subsequently spent time on loan at Torino and Cagliari before returning to Brazil in 2018.
